With almost 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith S. Berman operates a private practice as well as an ambulatory surgical facility on Staten Island. At his practice, Dr. Keith Berman M.D. works to incorporate new and innovative therapies into his practice, including PRP injections. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment is a type of regenerative medicine that utilizes a patient’s own blood for therapeutic effect. PRP injections are used in several different areas of medicine including sports medicine, neurosurgery, and cardiac surgery. Plastic surgeons also have recognized their benefit as a cosmetic procedure due to their ability to stimulate cells for hair growth or collagen production. When used on a patient’s face, PRP injections also help tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. When a patient receives a PRP treatment, blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate it into layers. The top layer, plasma, is then injected into the patient’s skin with a fine needle. The procedure usually takes about an hour with normal activity resumed in 24 hours. In order to maintain results, the procedure should be repeated for each of the next three months and then one to two times annually. Unlike synthetic dermal fillers such as Botox or Dysport, which in rare cases can cause inflammation and infection, PRP uses a patient’s own blood, eliminating those risks. In addition, PRP is designed to stimulate cells to heal themselves, while Botox is intended to relax muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Both treatments have a specific set of benefits and should be discussed with a qualified physician.

As owner of a private cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Keith Berman has developed an integrated program known as the BodyMax Weight Loss Program. Through this program, Keith S. Berman, MD, uses plastic surgery and medical interventions to help patients lose weight. To understand and pursue weight loss, one first needs to understand the elements that contribute to weight gain. The most basic scientific explanation is that weight gain occurs when the body takes in more calories than it burns. However, there are a number of medical, psychological, and even genetic factors influence the process. Recent research has identified certain genes and gene variants that increase an individual's risk of obesity. It is important to note that the degree to which genetic expression influences weight varies significantly based on lifestyle factors. Individuals with two parents who are obese, for example, have an obesity risk as high as 80 percent, regardless of behaviors. Many of these people find that their weight remains relatively steady even with alterations in diet and exercise .Others find that their weight varies significantly depending on their lifestyle choices, though support and interventions may still be necessary to achieve an ideal weight. Regardless of genetic influence, people are likely to gain weight if insufficient calorie burning occurs, a situation that may be caused by a sedentary lifestyle. Similarly, if an individual eats foods that are high in calories relative to nutrient input, eats in quantities higher than necessary, or seeks out food even when he or she is not hungry, weight gain is likely. Adjustments of any of these factors then become important components of any weight loss regimen. A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith S. Berman has maintained an independent practice on Staten Island in New York since 1998. Keith Berman, MD, recently began using platelet rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment for hair loss. Platelet rich plasma for hair loss, or PRP, uses growth factors in the patient's own blood to encourage the regeneration of hair from living follicles. It incorporates many of the same processes that have informed clinical research in surgery and sports medicine. Both specialties have identified potential uses of PRP in promoting wound healing and healthy clotting. The process begins by taking a sample of blood from the patient. The sample then goes through a centrifuge, which separates the platelet rich plasma. Contained in this plasma is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), and other key signaling proteins that can stimulate hair follicles. A surgeon injects the plasma into the affected area of the scalp, and the plasma begins to go to work. The procedure itself takes approximately one hour, and the patient goes home the same day. Patients must then return to the office monthly for several months. During this time the procedure’s effects typically begin to manifest. Patients return bi-annually or annually going forward to maintain and encourage results. Owning and practicing at an independent plastic surgery practice on New York's Staten Island, Dr. Keith Berman offers an integrated weight-loss program known as Body Max Weight Loss. Through this program, Dr. Keith Berman supplements diet, exercise, and medication with liposuction and other cosmetic procedures. Liposuction is available in a number of forms. All use specially designed surgical instruments to remove fat from specific areas of the body, but each type relies on a different technique to make this happen. Traditional liposuction employs vacuum pressure and a small cannula to extract the fat, while twin cannula-assisted liposuction (TCAL) adds an extra cannula to minimize scarring and discomfort. Tumescent liposuction requires the surgeon to inject a liquid anesthetic solution, which contains epinephrine and lidocaine, to contract the blood vessels and ease the extraction procedure. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) liquefies the fat to simplify removal, while laser-assisted liposuction achieves the same end by introducing low levels of energy waves. Most of these techniques are outpatient procedures, though extensive fat removal may require a hospital stay. Such procedures may also necessitate deep sedation or general anesthesia, whereas local anesthetic is sufficient in many other cases. Dr. Keith Berman is a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Staten Island, New York. Outside of work, Dr. Keith Berman maintains membership with the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY). The MSSNY provides members with access to modules on burnout from the American Medical Association. These modules are especially valuable for physicians, whose burnout rate is 10 percentage points higher than that of the general population. Two modules offer key strategies for physicians to learn about and prevent burnout. The first, Improving Physician Resiliency, assists in an internal approach to stress management. The module provides simple, proven strategies for physicians to better manage the stress of the constantly changing medical environment. The second module, Preventing Physician Burnout, offers advice on how to make changes that improve workflow and reduce barriers to patient care at a practice-wide level. Through assessment tools, targeted intervention strategies, and increased physician involvement in the practice, physicians can decrease professional stress. |
