A board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith S. Berman has maintained an independent practice on Staten Island in New York since 1998. Keith Berman, MD, recently began using platelet rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment for hair loss. Platelet rich plasma for hair loss, or PRP, uses growth factors in the patient's own blood to encourage the regeneration of hair from living follicles. It incorporates many of the same processes that have informed clinical research in surgery and sports medicine. Both specialties have identified potential uses of PRP in promoting wound healing and healthy clotting. The process begins by taking a sample of blood from the patient. The sample then goes through a centrifuge, which separates the platelet rich plasma. Contained in this plasma is vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF), and other key signaling proteins that can stimulate hair follicles. A surgeon injects the plasma into the affected area of the scalp, and the plasma begins to go to work. The procedure itself takes approximately one hour, and the patient goes home the same day. Patients must then return to the office monthly for several months. During this time the procedure’s effects typically begin to manifest. Patients return bi-annually or annually going forward to maintain and encourage results.
