Owning and practicing at an independent plastic surgery practice on New York's Staten Island, Dr. Keith Berman offers an integrated weight-loss program known as Body Max Weight Loss. Through this program, Dr. Keith Berman supplements diet, exercise, and medication with liposuction and other cosmetic procedures. Liposuction is available in a number of forms. All use specially designed surgical instruments to remove fat from specific areas of the body, but each type relies on a different technique to make this happen. Traditional liposuction employs vacuum pressure and a small cannula to extract the fat, while twin cannula-assisted liposuction (TCAL) adds an extra cannula to minimize scarring and discomfort. Tumescent liposuction requires the surgeon to inject a liquid anesthetic solution, which contains epinephrine and lidocaine, to contract the blood vessels and ease the extraction procedure. Ultrasonic-assisted liposuction (UAL) liquefies the fat to simplify removal, while laser-assisted liposuction achieves the same end by introducing low levels of energy waves. Most of these techniques are outpatient procedures, though extensive fat removal may require a hospital stay. Such procedures may also necessitate deep sedation or general anesthesia, whereas local anesthetic is sufficient in many other cases.
