As owner of a private cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Keith Berman has developed an integrated program known as the BodyMax Weight Loss Program. Through this program, Keith S. Berman, MD, uses plastic surgery and medical interventions to help patients lose weight. To understand and pursue weight loss, one first needs to understand the elements that contribute to weight gain. The most basic scientific explanation is that weight gain occurs when the body takes in more calories than it burns. However, there are a number of medical, psychological, and even genetic factors influence the process. Recent research has identified certain genes and gene variants that increase an individual's risk of obesity. It is important to note that the degree to which genetic expression influences weight varies significantly based on lifestyle factors. Individuals with two parents who are obese, for example, have an obesity risk as high as 80 percent, regardless of behaviors. Many of these people find that their weight remains relatively steady even with alterations in diet and exercise .Others find that their weight varies significantly depending on their lifestyle choices, though support and interventions may still be necessary to achieve an ideal weight. Regardless of genetic influence, people are likely to gain weight if insufficient calorie burning occurs, a situation that may be caused by a sedentary lifestyle. Similarly, if an individual eats foods that are high in calories relative to nutrient input, eats in quantities higher than necessary, or seeks out food even when he or she is not hungry, weight gain is likely. Adjustments of any of these factors then become important components of any weight loss regimen.
