Dr. Keith S. Berman practices plastic surgery on New York’s Staten Island. Keith Berman, MD, draws on such innovative methodologies as platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy, which treats hair loss and other cosmetic issues. In the May 2008 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons published a review of studies on platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a cosmetic therapy. Although studies to date have been limited, largely due to a lack of standardization of treatment techniques, results are promising. In compiling the review, Dr. Alexes Hazen of the Hansjorg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery at New York University Langone Health led a team in analyzing a total of 22 published studies. Six studies evaluated PRP as a treatment for adrogenic alopecia, commonly known as female or male pattern baldness. All six studies showed strong regrowth rates. Another 14 studies assessed PRP as a treatment for facial rejuvenation. Positive cosmetic outcomes, including volume and texture improvement as well as a reduced appearance of wrinkles, were apparent in all cases. Researchers believe that formal controlled and randomized trials may help to confirm these findings and further understand the benefits of PRP therapies.
