Plastic surgeon Dr. Keith Berman developed the BodyMax Weight Loss program, which combines lifestyle and medical weight loss techniques with supplemental surgical techniques. Dr. Keith Berman offers this program through his independent surgical practice on New York's Staten Island. During a tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, a surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles to effect a more streamlined appearance. The surgery typically takes place under general anesthesia and requires that the patient first attend a consultation to determine whether and to what extent the procedure is appropriate. The first decision is whether the patient will need a full abdominoplasty or whether attention only to the tissue below the navel is sufficient to improve appearance. In preparation for an abdominoplasty, a surgeon will often ask patients who smoke to quit for a minimum of two weeks before and two weeks following the procedure, as cigarette smoke can slow healing and increase the chance of complications. Patients may also be instructed to alter medication schedules or to stop certain medications, particularly if a patient is taking an anti-inflammatory that can increase bleeding. Patients can also take advantage of the weeks before a surgery to collect ice packs, petroleum jelly, loose clothing, and other items to make recovery more comfortable.
