An experienced MD, Dr. Keith Berman received his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. Since 1998, Dr. Keith Berman has been practicing as a plastic surgeon in Staten Island, New York, where he performs numerous cosmetic procedures such as botox injections. Botox, short for botulinum toxin, is a biological substance used in a nonsurgical procedure performed to reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles in the face. Throughout the years, the procedure has maintained its popularity and has been used to improve the appearance of crow’s feet, neck bands, and chin dimples. Botox is also prescribed in cases where patients want to lift the corners of their mouths or soften a square jawline. How does Botox work? A purified substance derived from bacteria, Botox has the ability to block neural signals within the muscle group into which it's injected. Once these nerve signals are blocked, the muscles affected are not able to contract. As muscle contractions (brought about by activities such as smiling, chewing, or squinting) are the main culprit in wrinkle formation, this reduction in muscular activity can result in the softening or elimination of unwanted facial wrinkles. Botox may be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures such as laser treatments, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion in order to improve the results and prevent new lines from forming.
