Dr. Keith Berman, a board certified plastic surgeon, offers a variety of services for patients at his New York practice. For instance, Dr. Keith Berman oversees weight loss programs for patients, which may include follow-up procedures such as liposuction. For many individuals who have achieved weight loss and still desire a more slender look in certain areas of the body, such as the hips or abdomen, liposuction may provide the desired results. However, before going forward with surgery, be sure to ask questions and obtain a full understanding of the procedure and what comes afterward. Know, for example, that you will not see the final results right away. Swelling occurs in the area after the surgery, and may continue for weeks or even longer after the procedure. To help with recovery, your doctor may ask you to wear special garments designed to compress the area to help with this swelling. In some cases, he or she may need to insert a tube to drain the treatment area as well. In addition to wearing compression garments, be sure to follow any other instructions the doctor might have. For instance, he or she might ask that you do some walking the day following the procedure to lower the chances of clotting. However, this walking, or any other type of exercise, should only be done if the doctor gives the go-ahead, as each patient’s situation is different. Finally, the plastic surgeon should explain what signs to keep an eye out for that might indicate an infection. These signs can include swelling that does not go away during a specified time period. Be sure to report this or other troubling signs right away.
