A well-established Staten Island plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith S. Berman provides board-certified care for the face, breast, and body. One of the procedures Keith S. Berman, MD, regularly performs is breast augmentation, utilizing either fat transfer or breast implants. Also known as mammoplasty, the use of breast implants may also be used for reconstruction purposes following injury or mastectomy. One key decision when considering breast implants is which type to use, with saline implants the safest, as they are filled with sterile salt water. In cases of implant shell leakage, the implant simply collapses and the saline is absorbed naturally into the body before it is ultimately expelled. Silicone implants utilize a silicone gel filling, which has a more natural feel but poses a certain level of risk, as gel from a leaking implant is not naturally expelled by the body. MRI or ultrasound screenings may be required to check the condition of the implants from time to time. As an alternative, some patients choose so called “gummy bear” breast implants, which are firmer and are designed to keep their shape even if the shell should break. Another alternative is structured saline implants, which have an inner structure that provides a more natural feel, while offering an outer structure containing sterile salt water.
