As owner of an independent cosmetic surgery practice, Dr. Keith Berman offers a variety of procedures for the face and body. Dr. Keith Berman draws on extensive experience with breast augmentation and the use of breast implants. A number of options exist for women who wish to increase the size of their breasts. Many women opt for implants, the most common of which are filled with either saline or silicone. Some feel that the gel-like compound included in silicone breast implants feels more like natural breast tissue as compared to the sterile salt water of a saline implant. However, because saline implants may pose a risk if they leak and thus require closer monitoring, they are only available for women over the age of 21. Saline implants are available for women 18 years of age and older. Advancements in cosmetic surgery have also led to the development of form-stable breast implants, also known as gummy bear implants. Filled with a thicker gel than traditional silicone implants, they hold their shape even when broken and may be less likely to leak. They are of a tapered shape that is broader at the bottom and, as a result, require a longer incision to introduce. Round breast implants may be available for those patients who want a fuller look, while smooth implants provide a soft feel to the touch. Smooth implants also tend to move more like a natural breast, while textured implants are designed to hold their position in the chest. These specialized implants are the result of research in cosmetic surgery, which continues to develop new forms of implants to serve patients' varying needs.
