Dr. Keith S. Berman, the recipient of a Vitals.com People's Choice Award for his plastic surgery services, has performed a range of cosmetic surgical procedures at his Staten Island private practice since 1998. Keith Berman, MD, is skilled in a number of rejuvenation procedures, including Botox injections. New research findings published in the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that Botox can help reduce the appearance of scars in patients receiving facial reconstruction surgery. A clinical trial documented the results of 16 young patients undergoing reconstructive and cosmetic facial procedures. A Botox solution was injected into half of each patient’s scars. Surgeons examined the results six months later and found that scars treated with Botox immediately after surgery were less prominent than untreated scars. Researchers hypothesize that the muscle-paralyzing effect of Botox reduces pulling along the scar lines. This reduces motion and skin tension, which often results in common scarring characteristics such as hyperpigmentation, or darkened skin, and hypertrophic, or raised, scarring. Further research will investigate if other Botox techniques yield similar results. To learn about various cosmetic procedures and Dr. Berman's practice, please visit www.drkberman.com.
