With almost 25 years of experience as a plastic surgeon, Dr. Keith S. Berman operates a private practice as well as an ambulatory surgical facility on Staten Island. At his practice, Dr. Keith Berman M.D. works to incorporate new and innovative therapies into his practice, including PRP injections. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatment is a type of regenerative medicine that utilizes a patient’s own blood for therapeutic effect. PRP injections are used in several different areas of medicine including sports medicine, neurosurgery, and cardiac surgery. Plastic surgeons also have recognized their benefit as a cosmetic procedure due to their ability to stimulate cells for hair growth or collagen production. When used on a patient’s face, PRP injections also help tighten the skin and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. When a patient receives a PRP treatment, blood is drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate it into layers. The top layer, plasma, is then injected into the patient’s skin with a fine needle. The procedure usually takes about an hour with normal activity resumed in 24 hours. In order to maintain results, the procedure should be repeated for each of the next three months and then one to two times annually. Unlike synthetic dermal fillers such as Botox or Dysport, which in rare cases can cause inflammation and infection, PRP uses a patient’s own blood, eliminating those risks. In addition, PRP is designed to stimulate cells to heal themselves, while Botox is intended to relax muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Both treatments have a specific set of benefits and should be discussed with a qualified physician.
