Dr. Keith S. Berman has practiced plastic surgery on New York's Staten Island for 20 years. Experienced in the use of non-surgical as well as surgical techniques, Keith Berman, MD offers dermal fillers for his patients as part of his practice. Through the use of dermal fillers, a plastic surgeon can make a patient's face look softer, fuller, and more youthful. There are a number of different products that can achieve these ends, and each take effect in different ways. Hyaluronic acid, an active ingredient in such branded products as Restylane and Juvederm, is effective in contouring the skin and lifting areas that are sunken due to scarring, wrinkles, and changes in face shape. It is a naturally occurring chemical in the body and is also used to relieve symptoms of arthritis. Calcium hydroxylapatite, known commercially as Radiesse, is also a naturally occurring chemical. It enhances facial volume for aesthetic and medical reasons, while also smoothing out moderate to deep creases. Polyalkylimide, or Aquamid, There are a number of other dermal filler compounds on the market, though some patients may also have access to fat injections as dermal fillers. This is a more involved and invasive procedure, in that the surgeon must extract fat from the patient's own body and inject it into target areas. However, once injected, any fat that survives becomes a permanent addition to the patient's facial structure.
