As a board-certified cosmetic surgeon in Staten Island, New York, Dr. Keith S. Berman performs body, face, and breast procedures. Keith Berman, MD, treats his patients by drawing on diverse experience with different types of breast augmentation procedures. Traditionally, patients seeking breast augmentation have had the option of implants made of either saline or silicone. Saline implants feature a silicone shell filled with sterile salt water, which medical professionals have used for intravenous hydration. The advantage of this option is that if the implant leaks, the solution will not harm the internal body tissues. Silicone implants are filled with a thicker polymer, which many people believe looks and feels similar to natural breast tissue. This makes them appealing to many patients, although the risk of subtle leaks means that regular checks are necessary. Recently, however, the development of a form-stable silicone has helped to reduce these risk. This silicone resembling a chewy candy in texture has led to the product's nickname as the “gummy bear implant.” Because they are more solid, these implants have a higher likelihood of staying intact if the exterior ruptures. Another new material, known as high-strength cohesive silicone gel, is the strongest silicone available. Despite its strength, it retains a natural look and feel. Patients may also have the option for fat transfer breast augmentation, which harvests fat cells from an individual's own body to provide volume in the breast.
