Dr. Keith Berman has worked as a plastic surgeon based out of Staten Island, New York, since 1998. Over the course of his career, Dr. Keith Berman has performed a number of unique procedures, including breast reduction surgery. There a number of reasons why an individual might consider breast reduction surgery. General pain and discomfort throughout the neck and back is a major reason to consider reducing the size, and therefore the weight, of the breasts. A person whose breasts do not cause pain during daily activities may consider reduction surgery if their breasts present a hindrance during more aggressive physical activities, such as exercise or playing sports. Professional tennis player Simona Halep opted for breast reduction, a decision that has helped her become one of the top-ranked players in the world. The procedure may also be performed for purely cosmetic purposes. Alternatively referred to as a reduction mammoplasty, a breast reduction procedure involves the removal of tissue and skin from the breasts, a process that involves reducing their overall size while also modifying the shape. In order to safely remove tissue and skin, a plastic surgeon must make at least one incision in either breast. In most cases, these incisions are closed with stitches. Stitches can be removed within one to two weeks, though the area may still be sensitive for up to a month following the procedure.
